In 1978 Professor David Morley and Dr. Hugh Hawes developed the idea of Child to Child to commemorate the forthcoming UN International Year of the Child. Professor David Morley was a paediatrician and professor at the Institute of Child Health, while Dr. Hugh Hawes was an educationalist at the Institute of Education, London.
Having both worked extensively across Africa and Asia, they saw the enormous untapped potential of children to make a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of their communities. They recognised that, to realise this simple vision, adults needed support to facilitate children’s engagement and meaningful participation. Beginning with the development of activity sheets on key health concerns where children could make a difference, Child to Child was born. The simplicity and accessibility of the approach (and the fact that it was copyright free) meant that within a few years, it had spread like wild-fire around the world!
All over the world, children, their families and communities have seen their lives transformed as a consequence of the vision, drive and dedication of both David and Hugh.
