Learning together in the Mpika Inclusive Education Project

From 1999 to 2002, the Mpika Inclusive Education Project (MIEP) integrated children with disabilities in regular classrooms in 17 schools of the Mpika district in Northern Province, Zambia. The project reached 10,387 children, including about 200 children with disabilities.

By actively promoting strong links between children in special units and children in regular classes, MIEP has helped change attitudes in the community towards children with disabilities, in particular, and highlighted the difficulties faced by many other children as well.

Teacher’s experience of the Mpika Inclusive Education Project

This collection of Zambia teachers’ voices gives a first-hand understanding of the problems and solutions which the communities in the Mpika district have had to face and come up with, in order to make their schools more inclusive. Child to Child ran the MIEP project in this area from 1999 to 2002 to promote inclusive education, building on the activities it has been undertaking since 1986 in Mpika to raise awareness of health issues among the community and in schools, and to promote ‘democratic’ classrooms.
